Continue with relic trend of milking their game and franchise since the first dawn of war, dawn of war 2 expansion comes with 1 new race and campaign. But the amount of effort put in by the developers is commendable resulting in the campaign actually plays out much exciting and original which expansions usually doesnt offer.
In warhammer 40k universe, war never ends, so before the tyranid corpse finsih decomposed from your victory during dawn of war 2, your old brother come knocking on the door, with a planet. A planet previously being pulled into the warp reappear in normal space with a blood raven distress signal planted by chaos. And things conveniently onfold the usual sci fi style, with a little twist not seen in previous blood raven field trips.
Most important is the corruption system where tempting choices will be presented to you during the course of the crusade. Fall for it and you will be on your way to becoming the very thing you are fighting all your life. All is not lost as your god emperor will cleanse you if you perform above your duty for his glory or continue down the wretched path and gain supernatural power granted by the dark gods. This system sounds like fun and those playing rpg will be familiar with it, but the implementations doesnt seems to be well integreted to the story. Other than the dreadnaught captain thule not be available for deployment after you max out your corruption meter, it will not have any affect to the story till the ending. A fully corrupted character wearing corruption gear doesnt become chaos marine cosmetically is also disappointing. The campaign is very short compared to the original because it doesnt have filler mission that is repeative, which is good, but you just cant get enough of more. But fear not, if your first playthrough is pure in the eyes of your emperor then its time to be lost in the dark gods madness to unlock a different ending.
The difficulty of the primarch level is legendary and i personally feels it is infact more challenging then the original. Enemy now comes is such huge amount that simple crowd controlling and micro managment those obscenely high HP and damage enemy no longer produce the same effect, especially at the start of the campaign. In fact i find it impossible without joining the chaos to exploit special abilites from the dark gods to overcome the enemy at primarch level unless you dont mind keep losing a mission and come back with a higher level units as experience and items still remain after you fail the mission.
The multiplayer will feature chaos as a playable race while the rest have much more customisation on upgrade and a new unit each. The mechanics of the game still remain the same and tha arrival of the tainted ones doesnt upset the balance of this delicate bloodletting festival.
Visually, no technology advancement have been made. Just adding the new objects and art from chaos, increase the amount of enemy on screen during campaign, its very much the way it have been 1 year ago. But that isnt half bad, dawn of war 2 still holding on as one of the most impressive RTS engine in the market.
Ultimately, this game isnt here to attract new audience but for those that love the original dawn of war 2 and cant get enough of the carnage. The high price may be a barrier for some, but this are after all small compared to the joy of serving the dark gods once more.
Defend mission just got tougher
