This is the first resident evil franchise i played and it leaves me with mix feelings. Although it wasnt the stalker or dead space type of slow, pyschological punishing horror surviving game i orginally expect, resident evil 5 is a action packed zombie slaugtering fun with over the roof bosses, vehicle manslaughter to even orbital strike!
Although it is more action oriented game than its predecessor, resident evil 5 still has some mechanics to slow you down and prevent becoming another doom replicate. You cant move while you shoot or reloading and the amount of ammo is pretty limited. Totally cant believe the top agent of the world anti bio threat agency couldnt even shoot a pistol while walking but it increase the sense of vulnerability and difficulty to make the game more enjoyable but at the expense of realism. Accompanying you will be Sheva,an AI partner or your friend in co op mode to watch your back during the painful days ahead. The AI did a good job in pathfinding and developers has specially design the game levels that requiring special coordination to achieve the objective together. Most would probably fall in love with her until you realise in horror that she spray bullet so freely that you will start starving her of any ammo to stay alive yourself. So most of the time, she will end up a slave to help you carry items and only giving her some of your scarce ammo when absolutely neccessary. During your journey, capcom is back with its cinematic, well designed cut scene to let the plot unfold or just to show some kung fu. It would be perfect until numerous nonsensical, irritating quick time event littered the cutscenes to disrupt your little drama session. By nonsensical, its like pressing different combination of A, D ,F ,Z just to push a boulder. Best of all is they comes unexpectedly, one amount ago you dodge the boss attack, the second attempt the boss tried to caress you, the quick time event pops up and congragulations, your grade just drop from S to A because you died in the cinematic. YAY! -.-
Another unexpected is the zombies design. Since this is the first game i play, i was expecting slow mindless zombies with highly evolved boss like nemesis featured in the movies. What welcome me is fast, gun firing, motorcycle riding and venus trap looking mouth zombies that totally shatter my ideal day of apocalypse. Not to forget the controversy some "human right group" complaining about economically superior westerner killing and looting poor africans in games. So capcom added more westerner into a native african town to defuse the situation, which makes the game atmosphere feel unauthentic. Way to go to those activist because according to their theory, its ok to kill westerners, nazis, chinese, muslims in the virtual world but not zombified african with no political involvement in the plot.
Capcom also miss the chance to make the game more atmospheric and realistic.Fighting zombies in bright daylight remove much of the fear factor which i was eagerly hoping.Next is about your companion Sheva. If she whines more, break down when infection reach her home town or even better a family member falling victim would seriously boost the sympathising rating and makes you feel attached to whats going on in the story. Instead she gives the generic response which dont give a damn about her own people, so why should you? The plot becomes too cheesy, and to an extent lame when side characters fall like flies, enemies talk like clowns and you and sheva kill so well that makes you wonder why they dont make a bio weapon based on you two instead.
I usually dont whine and rant about the sound department but theres some flaws here that further break the atmosphere of the game. "Combat" music start playing before the enemy even start engaging you or you noticed them thus giving you an early warning of the fight ahead, which further destroy the horror atmosphere that suppose to come with a zombie game? Next is that capcom really have tight budget for voice acting as some character voice over sucks so bad, you want to shoot him not for what virus hes going to unleash but his voice getting on your nerves.
Visually, other than my desire to have night scenes, it look admiringly well. African slum, tribal village, industrial areas, ancient ruin, underground lab and even volcano is well rendered. Enemy animation can look floating at times, and may get stuck but the best thing is this game can run max at 16x15 with 2x AA at mostly 60fps on my previous 8800gt.
After you complete the game you get outfits, chance to play as sheva and unlock survival mode. If you are a perfectionist, there are tons of hidden treasures to hunt to keep you entertained, increasing the time to complete a mission significantly. Even when you think such amount of post campaign content is sufficient, 2 DLC have been released on the consoles and may come to PC to give you another excuse to return. If you are like me that already have a certain expectation of the resident evil franchise from its motion pictures or its previous installments, you will be very disappointed. However, if you keep an open mind, resident evil 5 is actually a pretty satisfying action game that isnt that bad afterall.

So far so good!!
