Bioware newest sex simulator is here. This time round its back to the age of swords, magic and elves.
The first thing you notice about dragon age 2 is its unique narrative. Its about one of your ex crew telling the story of your legendary deeds. It does have its mishap since some future plot is disclosed before it even happened. But it was quite well done, with the overall story satisfying. You play a human refugee from Lothering, displaced by the previous blight. You start with a humble beginning and slowly crawl your way up to fame and power. Wont be giving spoilers here but its gonna be a cliffhanger ending, leaving you with blue balls.
Next is the visuals. It is a massive step forward compared to dragon age. The main characters are detailed and well designed. Once you get the first taste of combat, you will be amazed by the large amount of animations even for melee attacks. The spell animations are gorgeous, albeit alittle overkill. The environment design is improved too, till you realize you are stuck in the same city for the entire game. All this eye candy however come with a huge price in term of hardware requirement. This is especially so at max settings, which utilize DX11 for tesslation.
Combat as mentioned is fast. So fast sometimes you will notice enemy speed hacking. All the options for companion behavior and pause to make tatical decision is still around. So are limitation of unable to stack numerous actions at once.
The speech interaction is also streamlined. Now you get a system similar to mass effect 2 where you get a few generic response. Once its selected, the character will spit some interesting line that align with the selected effect. You can now make quick decisions without reading the entire speech. However, the story have become depressing linear this time round. Regardless of your speech options or actions, the game ends in a pretty similar fashion with little deviation.
Another issue is the gearing. You can no longer gear your companion's armor, although you still get to customize their weapons and trinkets. A welcome change is you can no longer bribe your companion. This makes you think twice of making decision that makes your companion angry as its hard to crawl back their affection afterwards.
The final battle was epic and satisfying. But its difficulty is overshadowed by a side quest. And the side quest is killing the high dragon, which makes you shit bricks even at normal difficulty.
A game not without its flaws and sometimes a step backward compared to the first. But the new combat system and improved visuals made up for it. The original dragon age have so many things done right you can hardly screw it up overnight. The product is a more action oriented RPG that is still highly recommended to fans and newcomers alike.
